Al Futtaim Carillion will build Al Muneera element of Aldar's £10bn Al Raha Beach development

A Carillion joint venture has signed a contract worth £550m in Abu Dhabi.

Al Futtaim Carillion signed the agreement with Aldar to deliver the Al Muneera development in Abu Dhabi.

Heads of terms for the development were agreed and announced during a visit by prime minister Gordon Brown last November.

Al Muneera will form a key part of Aldar's £10bn Al Raha Beach development.

The contract includes the construction of a 14-storey office building, 16 apartment buildings between 11 and 14 floors high, 148 town houses and 11 luxury villas facing the development's canal and waterfront.

Around 7,000 people will work on construction of the development under Al Futtaim Carillion, which is due for completion in April 2011.

This is the second major project undertaken by the Carillion JV for Aldar, after being awarded a £250m contract to build the Marina Hotel on Yas Island last June.

Carillion chief executive John McDonough said the firm expected “strong growth in Abu Dhabi to keep us on track”, as the “enormous growth in Dubai over recent years slows down”.
