A clutch of consultants have been appointed to a £100m package of repair works on London’s iconic Battersea Power Station, with work set to start in October.

Architect Wilkinson Eyre, engineers Buro Happold and Purcell, cost consultant Gardiner & Theobald and project manager Turner & Townsend have all been appointed.

The works mark the start of phase two of the overall development, which will see the Grade II* listed Power Station ultimately transformed into a mixed-use development.

Phase two is divided into two stages: the £100m external repair of the power station, taking 18 months; and a £600m mixed-use interior due to be contracted during those 18 months.

The long-awaited restoration of the power station will begin 30 years after power was turned off there.

This first phase of the works involves repairs to the external brickwork, wash towers, the steel frame, windows and the replacement of the four chimneys, which will be reconstructed.

The restoration of the Power Station building and chimneys is expected to complete in 2016.

Carillion was confirmed as preferred bidder for the £400m first phase last week – 866 apartments to be built to the west of the power station.

Chief executive of Battersea Power Station Development Company, Rob Tincknell, said: “Battersea Power Station is at the heart of this exciting new community, giving it an identity and authenticity unique among London developments.

“We have assembled an outstanding team to handle the restoration of this iconic building.  Their engagement marks the point at which we are delivering the inspiring work of Rafael Vinoly and constructing the world-class destination he has mapped out.

“The reconstruction of the iconic chimneys is an essential part of the refurbishment and will be undertaken with great care and precision so that they remain a landmark on the London skyline for decades to come.”
