How many square metres is the house? And will you be doing any tests to see if the reality matches the theory?

The total floor area on 2 floors is 118 m2. We will be monitoring the building with the support of Leeds Metropolitan University, and of course will publish results in due course.

Am I right that there is no thermal hot water allowed for in the construction? Seems a lost opportunity Peter

Dear Peter, We will at the very least make the house solar thermal hot water 'ready'. We are also looking into a new local authority grant scheme against a charge on the property. We will elaborate later.

Hi Bill, Just wondering what the costs are for project development and design work. From my limited experience of PHPP I know its a very thorough and detailed programme, but this means it takes a really long time. So these costs are bound to be higher for the first PassivHaus's that are built but hopefully drop as designers and architects become more experienced in the principles and PHPP. Thanks, Sophie

Sophie, I was hoping I was going to get away with no one asking this question! We at Green Building Store/Company have used this project to learn not only how to use Passivhaus Planning Package (the software programme for designing) but about the necessary components and their interaction with the build. We have developed our product range alongside the design process so I find it difficult to separate. However the AECB's Carbonlite PHPP Certification Process manual gives figures gained from the German experience. Using an outside PHPP Consultant with all the help an inexperienced design team would need might be 10000.00 including certification. An experienced design team, they suggest, gets this down to 4000.00 per project. I hope this goes some way to answering your question.

Are these costs inclusive or exclusive of VAT?
