Building has long been distinguished both for the level of its architectural criticism and for the number of its good architectural contributors

As Hansom noted last week (16 January, page 25), your long-serving architecture editor Martin Spring has retired. His incisive writing on well chosen buildings will be much missed: he will leave a big gap. Maybe a round-up of some of his best pieces (including some of the many that won awards) would make a good tribute. Better still to see his byline again from time to time.

I have to admit that I used to have a fairly easy time developing and contributing the “Building On Site” series from the late seventies under various editors. The last of these was Martin and over a few years he made me work a bit harder to improve my copy!
