This week Tonbridge Grammar School gets a new sixth form study area, Essex County Cricket Club gets 36 balconies and a dementia care home with a clover leaf layout is given a new exterior finish

Office complex

A new office complex for Smurfit Kappa’s Townsend Hook paper mill in Kent has been constructed off site using Yorkon building solutions. The off-site solution was chosen as the company needed the new facilities to be up and running as soon as possible in order to support the new manufacturing plant. The L-shaped building provides cellular and open plan offices, a canteen, and staff showers and lockers. The project was completed in 10 weeks.

Movers and Makers

  • The McAvoy Group has become thefirst off-site modular construction company in the UK to achieve BRE BIM Level II certification PAS 1192-2:2013, meaning the company is able to meet the government’s BIM level 2 requirements for centrally procured construction projects. As part of its BIM strategy, McAvoy intends to combine its subcontractor training programme with its internal BIM training programme.
  • EOS Facades, which provides steel frame systems, bespoke sections and pre-assembled elements for the off-site and volumetric modular building sector, announced it has been acquired by dry construction solutions company Siniat. This follows 10 years of Siniat investment in developing the EOS Facades product and service range. The companies look forward to combining their technical knowledge to create new solutions for light steel frame designers, engineers and installers.

Care home construction

The weber.rend MT multi-coat render system by Saint-Gobain Weber has been applied as the exterior finish to Woodward Close, a dementia care home with a clover leaf layout of five linked buildings in Winnersh, Berkshire. The system has a glass fibre meshcloth reinforcement with a resin-rich adhesive coat and has a variety of colour and finish options. Most of the fabrication was carried out off site, including the curved outer skin formed by the render carrier board, to speed the project up.

Life cycle data

Sika is now offering specifiers the official Environmental Product Declarations (EPD), helping it to compare products’ environmental performance. An EPD is an independently verified and registered document that communicates transparent and comparable information about the environmental impact of products throughout their life cycle. SikaTack Panel and SikaTack Panel-50, which can be bonded on or off site, are among the first products to carry this certification.

Off-site engineering

Prater was chosen to design, test and off-site engineer the complete external envelope package at BskyB’s Grant Way campus at Technology Park in West London. A total of 15,000m2 of pre-manufactured roofing system was delivered, along with 417 roof lights and 10,000m2 of external composite façade with an external rainscreen cladding system. The company was chosen because it had off-site manufacturing facilities that were suitable for delivering a project of this size.

Off-site modular solution

Wernick Buildings have constructed a research station for the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research using an off-site modular solution. The company was chosen as the building needed to be built quickly and blend in with the environment. The building has three connected rooms in a staggered asymmetric layout, along with working areas for the scientists there who measure the effects of increased atmospheric CO2 levels on mature woodlands.

Sixth form study centre

Off-site construction company Actavo Building Solutions has completed the sixth form study centre for Tonbridge Grammar School in Deakin Leas. The company was chosen because the school needed access to the new facilities as soon as possible to free up space in the existing sixth form accommodation area. The building was completed in 26 weeks and has an ICT suite and two open areas that can be used as classrooms, independent study or seminar rooms.

Fibre dry lining boards

Gypsum fibre dry lining boards from Fermacell have been chosen to supply modular classroom buildings for Weldon Church of England primary school. A total of 153 Fermacell 1,200mm x 2,400mm x 12.5mm boards were specified to line the walls and ceilings. The building was constructed as a flat pack and transported to Weldon. The products were chosen as the client required the building to be ready for use as soon as possible.

Off-site balcony solution

Sapphire’s off-site balcony solution has enabled the fast-track installation of pre-assembled balconies for the first phase of a residential development at Essex County
Cricket Club in Chelmsford. 36 balconies, which incorporate structural glass panels with a decorative screen-printed band, were installed to the new apartments in 10 hours.
The individual 1.2m x 2.0m balcony cassettes ‘glided’ on to the pre-erected connection brackets. The products were chosen in order to speed the installation.

Modular office block development

Various DuPont products have been specified for the Euro office development in Letterkenny, County Donegal, Ireland. The project consists of 300 modules over three separate three-storey blocks. The breather membrane Tyvek Soft is used as an external weather proofing shield and the air and vapour control layer DuPont AirGuard Reflective is used to enhance the airtightness of the structure.

Pitched Roof System

PIR manufacturer Recticel Insulation has launched a new self-supporting, room-in-a-roof system for pitched roofs. The new product, L-Ments, has a cable gap, breather membrane and counter battens. It also has structural timber in one PIR insulation panel as a single modular roofing element. The system is designed to have U-values of between 0.13 and
0.19 and is available in four different thicknesses and five different lengths.
