Union Unite says protest will take place outside practice’s Broadgate office today

Architectural workers at Bjarke Ingels Group are set to protest outside the company’s office in the City this afternoon over redundancy proposals.

The plan to cut jobs reportedly comes as the result of the loss of a major project in Saudi Arabia last year, which had kept a large number of staff in the firm’s offices in Broadgate employed.

Unite the Union, which says it represents more than 80 workers at the business, has accused Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) of refusing to meaningfully consult or meet with it to discuss redundancy proceedings.

Unite the Union says it has 80 members in the firm

The union claims its reps have put forward a “workable solution”, involving some members agreeing to voluntary redundancy at a higher rate of severance pay.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said the process had been “marred by critical failures” and said the union would “publicly hold BIG to account until these workers receive fair and decent treatment”.

BIG, which is working on the new Google headquarters building at King’s Cross, has been contacted for comment.
