Contractor to build 18,000-seat stadium and 140,000 sq ft Tesco Extra as part of wider regeneration plan

Barr Construction has won a £25m contract to build a 18,000-seat stadium for St Helens Rugby League Club.

The contract also includes a 140,000 sq ft Tesco Extra store on the site previously owned by United Glass.

The development partners, which include Langtree, St Helens Council, the Northwest Regional Development Agency and Saints club, says the regeneration of the site will lead to 1,400 new jobs.

Langtree managing director John Downes said: “The letting of the contract is the final part of the process and people will now see construction activity begin on site. With the stadium at its centre this development will deliver the wholesale regeneration of this brownfield site.
