Green housing expert Bill Dunster and former Crossrail chairman Douglas Oakervee among construction figures to receive honours

Bill Dunster, the is the architect behind ZED Factory and BedZED, has received an OBE for services to sustainable housing in the Queen’s birthday honours.

Douglas Oakervee the former chairman of Crossrail and Jean Venables, president of the Institution of Civil Engineers are also among those recognised for services to the construction industry.

Oakervee, who oversaw construction of Chek Lap Kok airport was chairman of Crossrail from December 2005 to May of last year, received a CBE while Dr Jean Venables, current president of the Institution of Civil Engineers also earned a CBE.

Donald Insall, founder of Donald Insall Architects, got a knighthood for services to conservation architecture, the highest honour to be bestowed on a construction figure this year.

Among other recognised for services to the construction industry are Mark Andrews, the former chief executive of M&E contractor NG Bailey, Nelson Ogunshalin, chief executive of the Association for Consultancy and Engineering and Richard Ogden chairman of Buildoffsite, who all received OBEs.

Michelle McDowell, structural engineering director of BDP also received an OBE together with David Henderson, managing director, Tobermore Concrete products, Deborah Smith, director of BRE and David Hardy, founder of the Considerate Constructors Scheme.

OBEs also went to Roy Cavanagh, labour and training manager at G and J Seddon, for services to construction, John Dew, principal construction project manager, Welsh Assembly Government and Professor Peter Brandon, former director of strategic programmes at Salford University, for services to the built environment.
