68-year-old was taken to hospital with a broken hip after accident in winds of more than 40mph

A woman was injured at the weekend after scaffolding in Tyneside collapsed in winds of more than 40mph.

The 68-year-old was struck while walking on a busy street. She was rescued by emergency services and taken to hospital with a broken hip.

The scaffolding was being used on the refurbishment of a disused shop. An investigation is now underway into how the incident happened.

The Health and Safety Executive has been informed of the accident, in which nobody else is believed to have been hurt.
