First phase of Granton Waterfront on Firth of Forth coast will include close to 850 homes
The Scottish government has announced a £42m funding package to support the construction of the first phase of the Granton Waterfront scheme near Edinburgh.
The scheme has been nearly eight years in the making with the proposals, designed by Collective Architecture, involving turning 140ha of former industrial land at Granton on the Firth of Forth coast into mixed-use. City of Edinburgh council bought the former gasworks from the National Grid in 2018.
Cruden Homes will build 847 net zero homes, including 387 affordable units alongside a new primary school and space for 14 businesses. Work on the scheme’s first phase is due to start early next year.

The work is part of a wider £1.3bn programme to regenerate Granton Waterfront, Scotland’s largest brownfield regeneration project expected to eventually deliver 3,500 new homes and the country’s biggest coastal park.
Under the terms of its deal, the Scottish government will provide the council with up to £2.1m per year over a 20-year period.
