Firm to design and build new sidings at Ilford train yard

Crossrail tunnel borer

Contractor VolkerFitzpatrick has won the £50m job to make a series of modifications to the Ilford Yard train stabling facilities to allow it to accommodate Crossrail trains.

The firm will build ten new sidings to house trains overnight and construct a new building for staff at the yard.

The firm saw off competition from rival contractors Balfour Beatty and Vinci Construction to take the job.

The job involves the design, procurement, testing and commissioning of the new sidings.

Work on the project is due to start this summer and complete in 2016. The existing depot will remain open during the works.
