Build UK’s on support for self-employed workers and PPE for the NHS

Following the publication of industry-agreed Site Operating Procedures, specifically in response to the risks created by Coronavirus, Build UK Contractor members are assessing their activities and preparing to continue or resume work on sites where the procedures can be complied with. Build UK has issued this statement with the support of Contractor members.

We recognise that transport to and from sites remains a significant challenge and Transport for London (TfL) is urging people to avoid travelling during the busiest times which are 05:45 - 7:30 and 16:00 - 17:30.

The Chancellor has announced that there will be income support measures for self-employed workers at the same level as that offered to employees. Self-employed workers can receive a taxable grant worth 80% of their average monthly trading profit over the last three years up to £2,500 per month for at least three months. HMRC will contact individuals once the scheme is operational.

More details are now available on the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) will publish guidance for construction employers shortly.

CITB has confirmed that it will defer the collection of the Levy for an initial period of three months. Levy bills, which are usually sent out to employers in April and due for payment in May, will not be issued or require payment until August or possibly later.

CSCS has:

  • Temporarily suspended its telephone service due to a reduction in the number of staff available; however, online applications can still be submitted.
  • Extended the period for card renewals to 12 months from the expiry date of the card. All workers should still hold a card relevant for their occupation.

The CLC welcomed the Guidance on Contractual Issues Caused by Coronavirus published by Build UK. It is preparing guidance on ‘mothballing’ construction sites in the event they close for a prolonged period of time.

The HMRC helpline number to support businesses concerned about not being able to pay their tax due to coronavirus has changed to 0800 024 1222. You can find a summary of all the financial support available to businesses in our easy to read table.

A huge thank you to all of our members that have offered PPE for the NHS – please contact Build UK if you can supply masks, gloves, gowns or goggles.

Businesses should continue to follow the most up-to-date Government guidance and for the latest updates please follow Build UK on Twitter and LinkedIn. If you have any construction-specific queries or feedback on what is happening, please contact Build UK.
