Scheme at 40 Holborn Viaduct set to be carried out by McLaren
Work to redevelop a City office built more than 15 years ago and set to be carried out by McLaren is being bankrolled by ING, the Dutch bank has said.
The Rolfe Judd-designed 40 Holborn Viaduct was completed by Balfour Beatty in 2008 but fresh plans by Eric Parry Architects will strip the steel-framed block back to its sub- and super-structure and add three new storeys – as well as extending the building outwards towards Holborn Circus with new planted balconies.
McLaren beat Mace and McLaughlin & Harvey to the job which is being masterminded by client Nuveen Real Estate.
ING said the redevelopment “will turn the property from a traditional brown building into a cutting-edge green workspace designed to meet the highest environmental standards”.
The bank said it had underwritten the job with a £170m green loan and the director of its real estate division Jennie Norman added: “This financing demonstrates ING’s dedication to enabling developments that contribute to a more sustainable future.”
Nuveen acquired the building in 2012 with the work also set to increase retail floorspace, include more windows and build a pocket park.
