Vinci begins work on Michael Aukett Architects-designed mixed use leisure, retail and residential project in south London

Streatham hub is being built by contractor Vinci and designed by Michael Aukett Architects

Construction of the £130m Streatham Hub by Vinci has begun. The scheme, designed by Michael Aukett Architects, will see a leisure centre with a 25m pool, full-size ice rink with 1,000 seats, and a fitness suite, built on the site of an old bus station and ice rink. The hub will also include a 63,000ft2 Tesco Extra store, 205 apartments and a bus station.

Lib Peck, Lambeth Council cabinet member for regeneration, said: “It’s fantastic to see the work moving forward, and it signals the beginning of a tremendously exciting time for Streatham.

“The fact that a regeneration project of this size is being accomplished despite the current national economic conditions, while at the same time providing hundreds of new jobs, is a huge achievement.”

The development is due for completion in 2013.
