Matthew Pratt lands role at later living giant as John Tonkiss stands down

Housebuilder McCarthy Stone has appointed former Redrow boss Matthew Pratt as its new chief executive.

The later living specialist, which has a turnover of more than £310m, said Pratt will succeed John Tonkiss.

A spokesperson for the company said Tonkiss “had decided to step down” after 12 years at the firm, with no further reason given.

Pratt previously spent 22 years at Redrow and led the housebuilder into its £2.5bn merger with Barratt last year

Pratt stayed on as Redrow chief executive and was also made an executive director of Barratt Redrow. But his departure was announced earlier this year. Tonkiss will step down at the end of next month with Pratt taking the CEO hotseat on 1 January.

The appointment follows several new senior executive appointments at McCarthy Stone in the past year.

Katherine Poulter joined as chief commercial officer after several years in the retail sector while Mark Hoyland, formerly chief executive of housing association Orbit Group and a managing director for Balfour Beatty, joined as managing director of McCarthy Stone Services in January.
