Brick House, London

Brick is the main theme of this house. The interior, awash with pure, raw, powerful fairfaced brickwork, has a unity that envelopes the visitor. Brick pattern, shape, colour and texture are all intensified by the top lighting and conspire to produce a truly memorable interior. Whether brutal or minimalist, the effect is still amazing.

One of nine pathfinder areas in the government’s housing market renewal initiative, the Bank Top is an ambitious scheme that seeks to upgrade the housing stock. Dismantling whole streets of outer leaf cavity walling and reinstating with new brickwork has been the most striking feature – all done without having to rehouse the occupants. Impressive.
