Sanyo Air Conditioners has launched an air-conditioning system partially powered by photovoltaic (PV) panels.

It takes some of its power from solar cells connected to a power inverter, which measures the system’s power requirements to regulate how much additional electricity is needed. Operating fully, the PV contributes about 10% of the power, while for background air-conditioning – about 30% capacity – PV contributes 70% of the system’s power requirements.

Sanyo has also launched the CO2 ECO heat pump for hot water and heating. Using compressed carbon dioxide as a refrigerant, the company claims it has a high coefficient of performance rating of 3.75. Sanyo says the refrigerant is much less environmentally damaging than HCFCs or HFCs.
